History of Our Club 2000-09

The following information was taken from facts compiled for the Rice County Steam & Gas Engines, Inc. Club by Mr. Dean Britton. Edits were made, but the overall content was not changed. Thank you Dean from all the current and future club members for all your hard work and devotion to the club. Without Dean's record-keeping, this writing would not be possible.

2000

The club held ifs first annual flea market/swap meet on Memorial Day weekend. A consignment auction and Barta Pedal Tractor Pull were also held. There were 192 tractor exhibits. Beautiful weather made for a very successful show.

 The raffle tractor was a restored Allis Chalmers Model C, with most of the restoration by Sam Sperry of Webster Township, and help from several club members.

New features at the show were the model airplane club exhibit and selection of a Miss Steamer to represent our club at parades and other events. The first Queen was Heidi Barta, daughter of club members Tracy and Luann Barta. The princess was Heather Duban, daughter of club members Wally and Linda.

We also initiated successful fundraising meals in Northfield and Faribault. Click here to see donor list.

2001

There were 202 tractor exhibits.

Raffle tractor was a  John Deere B restored and painted by Roger Caron and Curt Piper, Hoss Lancaster, with other members' help.
 

Club had first mini rod garden tractor pull.
 

Miss Steamer was Colleen Hogan.
 

1884 Northfield Township Hall donated their 118-year-old building to the club. Willard Estrem, Northfield Town board, Palmer Fossum, Bill Becker, Tom Duban, Lee Engleby helped to get this project done.

2002

There were 208 tractor exhibits.
 

Show was held August 31 - September 1. Admission buttons were $6 good for both days.
 

Case was featured tractor. One of main participants at fall show as Northland Case Collector's Group.
 

The club had underground electricity up to the club house in May 2002.
 

Raffle was a pug from Isaacson Implement, Nerstrand. It was won by Jeff Tuma, New Prague. Curt Piper, along with other members helped. 2nd prize - Case Pedal Tractor; 3rd Prize - 1/16th toy Case tractor (won by Simon Zeller of Red Wing).
 

Bleachers to seat 300 people were added.
 

Miss Steamer was Heather Duban. Princess was Gina Haaland.

2003

 

There were 229 tractor exhibits.
 

IH was featured tractor. Minnesota Chapter #15 (main participants at the show).

Raffle tractor was Farmall A restored and painted by Roger Caron and Curt Piper. Curt was main man with help from other members, Norm and Jeremy Sevcik. A new record was set on ticket sales.
 

Miss Steamer was Gina Haaland. Princess was Kristin Swanson.

2004

 

There were 247 tractor exhibits.
 

Show was held September 4-5. Admission buttons were $6 good for both days.
 

Oliver was featured tractor. We welcomed the Great Northern Oliver Collector's Club, who were the main participants.
 

Raffle was a 1944 Oliver 60 tractor or $1,500 cash. The tractor was restored and painted by Roger Caron and Curt Piper with help from other members. The tractor was won by Glen Pohl of Zumbrota, Minnesota.
 

Miss Steamer was Heidi Duban. Princess was Lori Barta.

The Board of Directors made a decision to purchase a 42' X 82' pole building for the saw mill at Malechas' farm.  Several members took trailers to their farm to dismantle, load and haul  to new site.  It was a big job.
 

2005

There were several tractor exhibits.
 

Show was held September 3 - 4. Admission buttons were $7 good for both days. This was the first increase in several years.
 

Massey Harris/Ferguson was featured tractor. One of main participants at fall show as Massey Harris/Ferguson Collector's.
 

Raffle was a 1949 Massey Pony or $1,500 cash. 2nd prize was a Massey Pedal Tractor from Willie's Toys, LeCenter, 3rd prize - 1/16 scale Massey Collector toy.

Clubhouse remodeling: Removed small rooms and opened it up for more usable space. Club meetings, vendor sales, and displays.
 

Addition of more bleachers.
 

Bleacher seats were painted.
 

Donated granary building was set up as 1920s display.
 

Tractor pulling track was upgraded with more clay and grading.

Miss Steamer 2005 was Lorie Barta. Her first attendant was Jennifer Janak.

 

2006

 

Ford was the featured tractor.  79 Ford/Ferguson tractors were displayed.  There was a total of 246 tractors.

1st Prize - 1952 Ford 8N Tractor

2nd Prize - Ford Pedal Tractor

3rd Prize - 1/16th Scale Ford Toy

 

The flea market had 42 vendors.  Great job, Mary Tulp!

 

Website and advertising were well done.  Dwight Hildebrandt reported 12,000 newspaper inserts in the Faribault and

 

Northfield papers were distributed.

 

Charter members, Smokey Cross and Dennis Waskowsky were given lifetime memberships in the club.

 

Miss Steamer 2006 was Jennifer Janak, daughter of Roger and Julie Janak of Northfield.  Her first attendant was Britny

 

Villwock, daughter of John and Valerie Villwock of New Prague.

 

2007

 

Feature tractor was Minneapolis Moline.  We had 306 tractors on display which is a record.

 

All the guys spent a lot of time remodeling the club house which made much better us of the space for meetings. 

 

The family of Alvin Drentlaw donated their 1920s farm house to the club and also paid to move it to the grounds.  House was moved late in the year and sat on the grounds until spring of 2008.

 

Laura Baker School donated their old swing sets.

 

We had 306 tractors on display which is a record.

 

Vic Wenzel donated the use of his 140 HP steam tractor.  There are only 3 left in the country.

 

Miss Steamer 2007 was Jamie Becker, daughter of Bill and Nancy Becker of Northfield.  Her 1st attendant was Casey Taylor, daughter of Ken and Kim Taylor of Northfield.

 

2008

 

Our big job was getting the Drentlaw house ready for the fall show.

 

Ray Simon of Simon Concrete put down the foundation of blocks before the building was placed in its final location. 

 

Several members worked on the project.  a metal handicapped ramp was installed on the north side of the building.  All of the sidewalks are made from old silo staves.  Our crew took one silo downy by hand, loaded, hauled and laid over 160' X 4' of sidewalk in one day.  Maple flooring was laid in the living room and new oak flooring was laid in the kitchen.  The main level was ready for our show.

 

We had 232 tractors on display this year.

 

Featured tractor was Allis Chalmers.

 

Miss Steamer 2008 was Britny Villwock, daughter of Jon and Valerie Villwock of Kilkenny.  Her first attendant was Miranda Fossum, daughter of Lowell and Loretta Fossum of rural Northfield.

 

2009

 

80' X 32' Food Pavilion erected. 

 

Vic Wenzel has another smaller steam engine.

 

Window covers put on the saw mill.

 

Received grant to replace the chimneys on the Northfield townhall and the Drentlaw house. 

 

John Deere was the featured tractor at our fall show.

 

Miss Steamer, 2009 was Jennifer Kaul, daughter of Mike and Kristen Kaul of Northfield.  Her 1st attendant was Anastacia Bouillez, daughter of Sandy Bouillez and Scott Quinnell of Northfield.
